Surface Analysis
Analytical laboratory techniques identify chemical functional groups on the surfaces of textile substrates. Applying FTIR-ATR spectroscopy allows quality control labs to scan fiber surfaces directly without dissolving or destroying the fabric sample. This method detects specific chemical bonds by measuring their absorption of infrared light.
Diagnostic Mechanism
The fabric specimen is pressed firmly against a high refractive index crystal such as diamond or zinc selenide. An infrared beam passes through the crystal and creates an evanescent wave that penetrates a fraction of a micron into the fabric surface. The reflected light is recorded by a detector to generate a detailed absorption spectrum.
Finish Quantification
Quantifying chemical finishes requires comparing the absorption peak ratios of treated fabrics to untreated baselines. In durable press finishing, FTIR-ATR spectroscopy measures the ester carbonyl band to evaluate the curing efficiency of the treatment. A stronger peak at this wavelength indicates a higher concentration of crosslinks on the cotton fibers.
This enables quick verification of chemical application before the fabric moves to garment assembly.
Fabric Quality
Surface contamination and coating thickness can also be monitored with this non-destructive technique. This process ensures finish uniformity across the entire fabric width during industrial padding operations.
