Winding Density
Density variations within a wound yarn spool describe the difference in compactness between the inner layers near the tube and the outer layers of the package. A package gradient influences the flow of dye liquor during pressurized dyeing, as fluids naturally follow the path of least resistance through less dense areas. If the winding tension is not controlled, the resulting pressure drop creates uneven colour saturation from the inside to the outside of the cone.
Liquor Penetration
Even distribution of chemicals depends on a uniform resistance throughout the yarn mass. A steep package gradient causes the dye to bypass the tightly wound inner layers, leading to a pale core and a dark exterior. Modern winding machines use electronic tensioners to decrease the winding force as the package grows, effectively flattening the density profile to allow for consistent radial flow.
Quality Inspection
Verifying the hardness of the yarn cone at various depths reveals potential dyeing risks before the material enters the vat. Technicians use a durometer to check for a consistent package gradient across the entire batch. Consignments that show a high degree of variation are rewound to prevent the waste of expensive chemicals and the need for re-dyeing.
Operational Goal
Achievement of a near-zero difference in density ensures that every metre of yarn receives an identical exposure to the treatment bath.
