Optical Configuration
Sphere-based color measurement instruments illuminate fabric samples with indirect light while capturing reflected energy at an angle eight degrees from perpendicular. Incorporating diffuse 8 degree geometry eliminates directional lighting bias caused by woven fabric textures or knit wale alignments. An integrating sphere coated with barium sulfate scatters light uniformly across sample surfaces.
Spectrophotometers using this optical arrangement detect subtle shade differences regardless of sample rotation.
Specular Component
Standardized measurement ports include or exclude gloss reflections by opening or closing a specular trap door inside the integrating sphere. When operating with diffuse 8 degree geometry, specular included modes measure total reflectance to evaluate dye concentration independent of surface sheen. Specular excluded modes measure appearance as seen by human observers under standard illumination.
Glossy synthetic linings yield lower color difference values when specular reflection remains inside the integrating sphere.
Measurement Surface
Sample holders press fabric specimens against viewing ports to maintain flat reflection surfaces during data capture. Textured knits require multiple readings at ninety degree rotations to average out shadow effects from raised loops.
Analytical Limit
Transparent mesh fabrics allow incident light to pass through samples into instrument cavities, distorting reflectance values. Backing light fabrics with white ceramic tiles standardizes light path returns during lab analysis.
