Analytical Protocol
An international testing standard describes the method for identifying and quantifying organtin compounds in textile products. This protocol, known as en iso 22744-1, applies to all types of fibres and is particularly used for synthetic fabrics with polyurethane coatings or finishes. It does not measure inorganic tin or non-extractable organotin compounds.
Extraction Method
The test is carried out by extracting fabric specimens with a solvent mixture containing a derivatizing agent under mild acidic conditions. This chemical reaction converts the organtin compounds into volatile derivatives that can be separated and detected by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Technicians can measure dibutyltin and tributyltin at concentrations below zero point one milligrams per kilogram of fabric.
These precise measurements are critical for verifying that antimicrobial or anti-odor finishes comply with consumer safety limits.
Compliance Audit
Garment brands mandate this testing for babywear and performance apparel where skin contact is high and sweating can trigger chemical release. Compliance with en iso 22744-1 is checked at the pre-production stage during raw material qualification. This protects manufacturers from incorporating non-compliant coated fabrics into their garments.
Method Limitation
The standard does not apply to the metallic trim or plastic buttons attached to the garment. Separate metal and plastic testing protocols must be utilized for those components.
