Colorimetric Protocol
Analytical colorimetric procedures determine total formaldehyde content in wet-processed fabrics through strong acid hydrolysis and reaction with dihydroxynaphthalene disulfonic acid. Testing facilities use chromotropic acid assay in accordance with ISO 14184-2 to release both free and bound formaldehyde under boiling sulfuric acid conditions. The strong acid environment breaks down N-methylol resin crosslinks in durable press cotton, releasing formaldehyde into solution to yield a purple chromophore.
Measurement capabilities stop at acidic conditions, as alkaline matrix components neutralize acid reagents and distort absorbance readings.
Absorbance Measurement
Reaction solutions react under concentrated sulfuric acid heat to form a stable purple complex monitored at 570 nanometers. Spectrophotometers quantify formaldehyde levels against a calibration curve established with standard formalin dilutions. High acid concentration forces complete cleavage of finish reactants, providing a total formaldehyde inventory.
Temperature variations during the boiling step alter color intensity and skew final calculations.
Interference Control
Extract colorations from deep-dyed textiles interfere with colorimetric evaluation at target wavelengths. Blank extractions without chromotropic acid correct for background dye leaching into solution. Matrix interferences from volatile organic compounds require baseline subtraction before reporting final values.
Safety Requirement
Handling concentrated sulfuric acid requires dedicated fume hoods and specialized spill containment protocols. Chemical hazards restrict this testing method to controlled laboratory environments with certified safety equipment.
