Barrier Configuration
Electrochemical sensors designed with two liquid interfaces prevent the contamination of the primary reference element by the process solution. A double junction reference electrode employs an intermediate electrolyte chamber between the inner reference wire and the sample being measured. This design protects the silver or silver chloride wire from ions that might react with it, such as sulphides or heavy metals found in textile dye baths.
Solution Interaction
Precise pH measurement in finishing processes depends on the stability of this internal potential. In a standard single junction probe, the sample solution can leach into the reference chamber, causing the reference voltage to drift and leading to inaccurate readings during critical dyeing cycles. The double junction reference electrode allows for the use of specialized electrolytes in the outer chamber that are compatible with the specific chemistry of the vat.
Maintenance Requirement
Clogging of the ceramic or porous junction represents a frequent cause of sensor failure in environments with high particulate counts. Because the double junction reference electrode has an additional layer of protection, it resists the buildup of proteins or dyes that typically blind simpler electrodes. Technicians replace the outer electrolyte periodically to ensure the path between the sample and the reference remains conductive and clear.
Voltage Stability
Sensors operate reliably across a wide temperature range common in textile steaming and washing. It provides a constant baseline for the glass electrode to measure against.
