Chemical Reactive
Specialized additives containing the isocyanate group are used to create strong chemical bonds between polymer chains in textile coatings. The role of an isocyanate crosslinker is to increase the durability and heat resistance of finishes such as polyurethanes or acrylics applied to the cloth. These compounds react with hydroxyl groups on the fiber or the coating resin to form a stable and permanent network.
Polymer Bonding
Heat usually triggers the reaction that locks the molecules together during the drying or curing stage of the production process. Using an isocyanate crosslinker improves the wash fastness of the treated fabric by making the finish less soluble in water and detergent. This ensures that the functional properties of the garment like water repellency or stain resistance last through many cleaning cycles.
Coating Application
Careful handling is required because these chemicals are sensitive to moisture and can be hazardous if inhaled by workers in the mill. When a mill adds an isocyanate crosslinker to a finishing bath, the mixture has a limited shelf life known as the pot life. The production team must apply the treatment quickly before the chemistry begins to set in the machinery which would cause a shutdown.
Durability Gain
Stronger molecular ties result in a finished product that stands up to heavy wear and industrial washing.
