Component Role
Specialized semiconductors capture a broad range of wavelengths simultaneously to analyze the colour and chemical composition of liquid or solid textile samples. A photodiode array consists of many individual light sensitive elements arranged in a linear or rectangular pattern. It allows a spectrophotometer to measure the entire visible or ultraviolet spectrum in a single flash of light rather than scanning through one wavelength at a time.
Detection Speed
Rapid data collection makes the photodiode array suitable for monitoring dynamic processes like the change in dye concentration during a lab dip. Because there are no moving parts in the sensor itself, the alignment of the wavelengths remains stable over thousands of tests. This stability is critical for the high volume testing environments found in garment export hubs.
Analytical Use
Integration with chromatography systems allows for the identification of multiple chemical components as they emerge from the separation column. The photodiode array provides a four dimensional data set comprising absorbance, wavelength, light intensity and time. This information helps chemists distinguish between similar dyes or detect trace amounts of restricted finishing agents.
Signal Quality
Performance is limited by the pixel pitch and the thermal noise generated during long exposure times. Cooling the sensor improves the signal to noise ratio and allows for the detection of very low light levels in dark fabric samples.
