Maintenance Treatment
Acidic wash treatment using specialized sulfur-containing compounds represents the primary method to restore the sensitivity of glass electrodes fouled by silver sulfide precipitates. This thiourea electrode cleaning dissolves the stubborn blockages that form in the porous ceramic junction when measuring sulfur dyes or reactive finishing baths. It is a necessary task to maintain rapid sensor response times in industrial textile labs.
Chemical Dissolution
Sulfide ions from dye baths react with silver ions from the reference electrolyte, creating insoluble silver sulfide that blocks the junction. A cleaning solution containing thiourea and hydrochloric acid complexes the silver, bringing it back into solution and clearing the porous pathway. This restoration allows the reference electrolyte to flow freely again, stabilizing the junction potential.
Processing Security
A blocked junction causes slow response times and significant voltage drift, leading to inaccurate pH measurements in the dyeing line. Implementing regular cleaning protocols ensures that sensors remain responsive and accurate, preventing shade variation and incorrect chemical dosing. It reduces the frequency of manual re-tests and improves overall process reliability.
Safety Precaution
Wiping the probe with deionized water after cleaning is essential to remove any residual acid. This ensures that the sensor does not contaminate the next test sample.
