Mass Verification
Commercial weight adjustments ensure that transactions for bulk fiber shipments are based on standardized moisture conditions. The process of trade mass reconciliation aligns the physical weight of a shipment with the calculated weight at standard moisture regain limits. This reconciliation prevents buyers from paying for excess water absorbed during storage and shipping.
Adjustment Formula
Samples are taken from a shipment, dried in a laboratory oven, and weighed to find their dry mass. The dry mass is then adjusted by adding the official commercial regain percentage for that specific fiber type. For example, cotton has a standard regain of eight and a half percent, which is added to its dry mass.
This corrected weight is used to calculate the official trade weight of the entire shipment, regardless of its wetness at the time of delivery.
Moisture Variations
Natural fibres can absorb high amounts of water when stored in humid warehouses or transported by sea. If a shipment is weighed on a wet day, its physical weight will be higher than on a dry day. Reconciliation steps remove this weather-related variable from the financial invoice.
Financial Settlement
Cotton and wool buyers use trade weight reports to settle final invoices with international shippers. Relying on verified laboratory measurements ensures that both parties agree on the actual mass of the fiber being traded. This practice reduces the risk of disputes and financial losses in commodity trading.
