Moisture Fraction
Water molecules held within the internal polymer lattice of textile fibres by hydrogen bonding or dipoles resist standard mechanical extraction methods. Wool and cotton fibers retain bound water even after mechanical hydroextraction at high centrifugation forces. Unlike free surface water, this molecularly constrained liquid requires thermal energy to disrupt chemical attractions and drive evaporation.
Standard oven-drying protocols at specified temperatures distinguish this internal mass from surface moisture to establish dry fiber weight. Commercial transactions rely on defined moisture regain percentages that account for this tightly held fraction.
Retention Physics
Polymer chains contain polar functional groups such as hydroxyl and amino groups that attract atmospheric water molecules. In natural fibers, bound water alters the physical spacing between microfibrils, directly modifying fiber diameter and mechanical flexibility. As relative humidity increases, successive molecular layers attach to primary binding sites until saturation occurs.
Free water then begins to condense in capillary spaces between adjacent fibers. The strength of these internal hydrogen bonds prevents water molecules from moving freely within the amorphous regions.
Desorption Energy
Removing tightly held moisture demands significantly higher thermal input than evaporating free surface liquid. Drying machinery operating in textile mills must raise ambient temperatures to break hydrogen linkages within amorphous zones. If drying temperatures drop prematurely, bound water remains trapped, causing inaccurate weight verification during batch delivery.
Excessive heating degrades natural polymers before complete moisture extraction occurs, damaging tensile strength.
Commercial Yield
Contractual billing for raw fibers uses oven-dry mass plus an agreed standard moisture regain allowance. Discrepancy between actual bound water content and standard regain allowances creates financial variance during yarn procurement. Buyers verify moisture levels with certified testing equipment prior to financial settlement.
