Volumetric Proportion
Ratio of unoccupied internal space to the total bulk volume of a fibre assembly, yarn strand or finished textile structure defines porosity. Within technical textiles and filtration media, void fraction dictates gaseous permeability, liquid retention metrics and thermal insulation efficiency. The measurement derives from calculations contrasting the bulk density of a textile structure against the true solid density of its base polymer.
Porosity calculations lose analytical utility if high compaction forces distort fibres permanently, altering the internal balance between closed micropores and open transport passages.
Filtration Performance
Industrial dust collection and liquid separation operations rely on tightly controlled structural porosity to retain particulate matter without causing excessive backpressure. Woven and needlepunched filter fabrics balance flow resistance against particle trapping efficiency via regulated adjustments to yarn packing density. A high void fraction facilitates high fluid throughput across the filter bag, reducing energy demands across exhaust fan systems.
If interstitial pores are excessively large, fine dust bleeds through the filter matrix, violating particulate emission limits on production lines.
Calculation Method
Laboratories determine this volumetric parameter by measuring dry fabric mass, structural thickness and fibre specific gravity under standard atmospheric conditions. Bulk volume calculations derive from specimen thickness measured under specified compressive loads in accordance with ASTM D1777 standards. True fibre volume follows gravimetric analysis using helium gas pycnometry to exclude outer structural spaces.
Subtracting the solid polymer volume from total measured envelope volume yields the net interstitial space, providing the final fractional or percentage porosity determination.
Finishing Alteration
Wet processing and chemical finishing steps modify the spatial structure of woven and knitted textiles. Calendering passes compress structural yarns, flattening the fabric cross section and lowering porosity to enhance wind resistance and water repellency. Conversely, caustic soda mercerization swells cotton fibres, altering internal lumen dimensions while changing interstitial yarn pores.
Mechanical scouring and desizing remove natural waxes and sizing agents, opening choked voids to improve downstream dyeing liquor absorbency across piece goods.
