Instrument Standardization
Daily spectrophotometer calibration requires a stable high reflectance standard to establish the maximum limit of the photometric scale. Technicians use a certified white tile reference to calibrate the instrument to one hundred percent reflectance across all visible wavelengths. This calibration is essential for ensuring that color measurements remain consistent over time, across different machines, and between different laboratories.
The procedure must be repeated at the start of every shift to guarantee measurement integrity.
Calibration Routine
Instrument software compares the measured reflectance of the tile against stored calibration values to compensate for lamp aging or detector drift. This automatic adjustment ensures that subsequent fabric scans are accurate and comparable. If the spectrophotometer is not calibrated against this reference, color readings will drift.
Dye houses rely on this step to maintain recipe accuracy.
Quality Control
Garment factories and fabric suppliers require consistent spectrophotometer performance to secure brand approvals. Relying on the white tile reference ensures that color readings taken in the mill match those taken in the buying office. This agreement prevents disputes over color approvals and reduces shipping delays.
Reliable calibration is the basis for digital color communication.
Handling Care
Even minor scratches or grease smudges on the ceramic surface will alter the light reflectance and invalidate the calibration. Colorists must clean the tile with lint-free wipes and alcohol according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. The reference tile must never be left exposed to dust or direct sunlight.
