Calibration Standard
Spectrophotometric measurement requires a stable and standardized surface to establish the baseline for reflectance data. A background reference plate is used to calibrate the instrument before measuring the color of fabric or yarn samples. This surface must have a known and consistent spectral reflectance across the entire visible range to ensure the accuracy of the color matching process.
Reflectance Surface
Ceramic or fluoropolymer materials are preferred for their stability. The background reference plate provides a diffuse reflectance that the sensor uses to define the light return point.
Spectral Consistency
Routine verification against a secondary standard ensures that the calibration remains within national metrology limits. If the background reference plate shows signs of degradation, it must be replaced to prevent shifts in the color data used for production approvals. Mill laboratories maintain these plates in protective cases when they are not in use to prevent dust accumulation.
Maintenance Requirement
Cleaning the surface requires specialized lint free cloths and high purity solvents that leave no residue. Because the background reference plate is the foundation of all subsequent color measurements, its condition is verified at the start of every shift. Standardized storage environments with controlled temperature and humidity prevent the material from undergoing subtle changes in its optical properties.
