Verification Scope
Chain of custody standards track input materials through commercial supply networks without asserting environmental or social performance qualities of the final product. Updated by Textile Exchange, ccs 3.0 establishes unified chain-of-custody requirements from raw material verification down to business-to-business sales. The standard applies to raw inputs containing claimed recycled or organic content, providing physical traceability through mass balance and transaction records.
It does not certify the raw material origin itself or establish social compliance in sewing plants.
Chain Integrity
Material moving through certified processing steps must maintain clear segregation or audited mass balance accounts at every facility boundary. Under ccs 3.0, each facility undergoes third-party audits to confirm that inputs equal outputs plus documentable waste. Processing facilities record raw material arrivals, internal batch conversions, and outbound ship weights within centralized ledger systems.
Losses during yarn spinning or fabric finishing must align with standard yield calculations. Audited entities issue transaction certificates for every commercial transfer to prevent double counting.
Document Auditing
Commercial accounting under this benchmark relies on transaction certificates issued by accredited certification bodies. Each certificate validates that a specific quantity of material transferred between companies meets certified input criteria. The standard requires full documentary alignment between commercial invoices and bills of lading.
Discrepancies between shipping manifests and claimed weights trigger mandatory site audits.
Reconciliation Boundary
Claim validity ends when certified material is sold to the final retail customer or passes into an uncertified processing unit. Within ccs 3.0, brand-level claims depend entirely on an unbroken chain of transaction certificates from raw fiber suppliers to garment manufacturers. Mixing certified lots with uncertified materials without approved segregation mechanisms invalidates the claim for the entire batch.
