Preliminary Processing
Mechanical reduction of tightly compressed lint into smaller aggregates facilitates the cleaning and blending of raw stock. Early cotton tuft opening occurs inside the hopper using rotating spiked lattices that pull fibres away from the bale. This initial separation creates enough surface area for trash removal.
The process is complete when the density of the stock is uniform enough for fine carding.
Cleaning Efficiency
Small masses expose hidden seeds or plastic contamination to the air currents inside the pre-cleaner. When cotton tuft opening is insufficient, the interior remains dense and prevents the separation of heavier particles. Proper tension on the pin apron controls the average size of the resulting tuft.
Machine Setting
Settings for the spacing between the feeder and the plucking machine determine the volume of lint processed per minute. Precise cotton tuft opening ensures that individual fibres are not damaged or broken during the expansion. High speeds increase throughput but risk creating neps or permanent fibre knots if the material is excessively dry.
Monitoring moisture levels helps balance speed and quality. Air flow sensors track the movement of these smaller masses through the transport pipes.
Volume Standard
Consistency in weight per meter is the primary outcome of effective opening. If the mass fluctuates, yarn evenness suffers.
