Fiber Extraction
The removal of non-fibrous processing aids from a textile specimen is essential before performing quantitative fiber analysis. A preliminary washing process using dichloromethane pretreatment strips away spin finishes, lubricants, and acrylic sizing agents from the yarn. This step isolates the core fiber so that subsequent dissolution tests yield highly accurate fiber blend percentages.
It represents the preparatory gatekeeper for standard fiber composition testing.
Extraction Protocol
The treatment requires placing the specimen in a Soxhlet extraction apparatus filled with the organic solvent. Over several siphoning cycles, the solvent continuously dissolves the lipids, oils, and waxes present on the outer sheath of the yarn. This cycle is repeated for a specified duration, typically several hours, to guarantee that no surface contaminants remain.
The cleaned fiber specimen is then dried to a constant weight in an oven.
Residue Removal
Removing the residual solvent is necessary to ensure the safety of the laboratory technician and the accuracy of the next analytical step. Dichloromethane possesses a low boiling point, which allows it to be evaporated easily from the textile matrix at moderate temperatures. The technician must ensure that no solvent is trapped in the amorphous regions of the synthetic fibers, which could artificially increase the dry weight of the sample.
This drying is completed in a vacuum oven or under a fume hood, and the process is monitored until the mass stabilizes to prevent incomplete desiccation of the fibers.
Method Limitation
This extraction does not affect the chemical structure of the major natural or synthetic textile fibers. It must not, however, be used on fabrics containing fibers that are soluble in chlorinated solvents, such as certain modacrylics or elastanes. If these fibers are present, an alternative solvent like petroleum ether must be used to protect the integrity of the specimen.
It is the primary cleaning step for cotton, wool, and standard polyester blends.
