National Standard
Quantitative verification of elastomer content in rubber products relies on thermogravimetric analysis to isolate polymer fractions from carbon black and mineral fillers. The Chinese national standard known as gb/t 14837 provides the official testing procedure for measuring the mass fraction of rubbers in raw materials or finished products. This test method is widely used in textile supply chains to verify elastomeric coatings on waterproof apparel and elastic bindings.
Elastomer Quantification
Heating cycles executed under nitrogen and oxygen separate the organic polymer from non-volatile additives. First, the sample is heated in an inert nitrogen atmosphere to pyrolyze the rubber hydrocarbon, leaving the carbon black and fillers. Then, the system introduces oxygen to oxidize the carbon black, allowing the balance to measure the remaining inorganic ash.
This multi-step heating allows yarn manufacturers to verify the rubber percentage in covered spandex yarns.
Test Limit
Thermogravimetric identification is restricted to elastomer blends with distinct decomposition temperatures. If the rubber compounds have overlapping degradation profiles, the individual components cannot be resolved by standard means. This analytical boundary must be considered when evaluating recycled rubber blends.
Industrial Adherence
Fabric mills supplying the Chinese domestic market must comply with this standard to pass customs and brand audits. If a lot of elastic webbing contains less rubber than specified in the contract, the batch is rejected. This standard-based testing maintains consistency across the supply chain.
