Enhanced Textile
Chemical swelling of dense cotton weaves results in a textile with improved luster and greater dye affinity. Most high end workwear and luxury chinos utilize mercerized heavy twills to provide both durability and a polished surface finish. The process involves soaking the fabric in a cold caustic soda solution while it is held under tension.
Caustic Treatment
Swelling of the cotton fibres during the treatment transforms the flat, ribbon like cross section into a more cylindrical shape. In the production of mercerized heavy twills, this alteration increases the surface area for light reflection and allows dyestuff to penetrate deeper into the yarn core. Tension prevents the fabric from shrinking, which helps to maintain the sharp diagonal lines of the twill weave.
Structural Integrity
Reinforcing the molecular structure of the cellulose leads to a fabric that resists tearing and abrasion more effectively than untreated versions.
Aesthetic Result
Verification of the treatment effect usually involves measuring the barium activity number to confirm the degree of mercerization. Because mercerized heavy twills are often used for uniforms, the consistency of the shade across different production lots is a critical quality requirement. Final inspection checks for uniform sheen and the absence of streaks that might indicate uneven chemical application during the pad dry cure cycle.
