Light Path
Physical measurement parameter representing the product of the geometric distance a light beam travels through a medium and the refractive index of that medium. In spectrophotometric analysis of dye liquors, the optical path length determines the amount of light absorbed by the solution. Maintenance of a constant value ensures the concentration calculations remain accurate across different tests.
Beer Lambert Application
The absorption of light is directly proportional to the distance it travels through the sample. If the optical path length is doubled, the measured absorbance also doubles, making it a critical factor in the calibration of color matching systems. Lab technicians use standardized cuvettes with a fixed width to eliminate this variable from their daily measurements.
Constant geometry allows for the direct comparison of spectral data from separate dye batches.
Fabric Transmission
When measuring the ultraviolet protection factor of a textile, the thickness and porosity of the material define the distance light must travel. A denser weave increases the effective optical path length by forcing the rays to interact with more fibre surfaces.
Instrument Correction
Modern sensors adjust for slight variations in the physical gap between the light source and the detector. Results from different mills become comparable through this normalization.
