Tracking Protocol
Tracing recycled material content in a final product relies on a chain of custody that follows the material through each stage of production. The rcs establishes a clear path for identifying the percentage of recycled inputs in a garment, ranging from 5 to 100 percent. Current frameworks focus exclusively on material identity and do not evaluate chemical use or labor conditions.
Certification Tier
Goods are classified according to the volume of recycled content verified by the auditor. An rcs 100 label indicates that the product is made of at least 95 percent recycled material, whereas the rcs blended label is used for lower concentrations. These distinctions allow manufacturers to communicate the exact nature of their sustainability efforts.
Chain Integrity
Each participant in the supply chain must hold a valid scope certificate to process or trade rcs goods. When a fabric mill sends a shipment to a garment factory, the rcs demands a transaction certificate to prove the recycled status of that specific lot. This requirement prevents the accidental or intentional mixing of virgin and recycled fibres during manufacturing.
Verified documentation must accompany every physical transfer.
Content Limitation
Current standards do not distinguish between pre consumer and post consumer recycled material in the primary labeling. Specific data regarding the origin of recycled waste resides in the supplemental details of the certification report.
