Elastomeric Formulation
Liquid polymer systems consisting of a base resin and a curing agent react chemically to form a flexible waterproof barrier on woven fabrics. Applying a two part silicone coating provides technical textiles with excellent thermal stability and water repellency. This protective layer is highly resistant to both ultraviolet radiation and mechanical folding.
Curing Process
The reaction begins immediately upon mixing the base polymer with the platinum or tin catalyst. Heat accelerates the crosslinking in continuous oven chambers, where temperatures of one hundred and fifty degrees Celsius drive off solvents and cure the elastomer in seconds. Precise air flow controls prevent surface skinning during this brief thermal transition, ensuring the surface is smooth and free from pinholes before being wound onto rolls.
Application Method
Direct coating using a floating knife or rotary screen applies the mixed formulation to the moving textile web. The system requires continuous feed mixing to ensure the ratio of resin to catalyst remains constant throughout the run. This continuous feed reduces scrap material left in the delivery lines when the machine stops.
Curing Limit
Chemical composition of the mixture dictates the pot life of the prepared formulation. Once combined, the viscosity doubles within four hours at room temperature, making immediate application necessary to prevent clumping on the coating knife.
