Polymer Classification
Technical raw material specifications identify the chemical substitution level and molecular weight distribution of esterified plant cellulose destined for synthetic fibre spinning. Selecting a specific cellulose acetate grade determines the solubility and mechanical tenacity of resulting filament yarns or filter tow. The primary parameter governing classification is the degree of substitution, which measures how many hydroxyl groups on each anhydroglucose ring have converted into acetyl groups.
Diacetate varieties maintain lower acetyl content around fifty-four percent, granting solubility in acetone for dry spinning processes. Triacetate classifications feature higher acetyl substitution levels exceeding ninety-two percent, requiring chlorinated solvents or specialized solvent blends for liquid dissolution.
Processing Behaviour
Industrial tow production and continuous filament extrusion demand strict rheological consistency from incoming polymer flakes to prevent yarn breakage during high-speed spinning. Variations in cellulose acetate grade directly alter solution viscosity, filtration pressure drop, and coagulation rates inside spinning cabinets. Flakes with higher degree of polymerization yield superior yarn strength but require elevated dissolution temperatures and lower polymer solids concentrations in the dope tanks.
Lower viscosity grades permit higher solids loading to boost production throughput, though the resulting filaments exhibit lower tensile recovery under stress. Mill operators adjust solvent recovery temperature profiles and extrusion nozzle geometry to match the specific dissolution characteristics of each raw material shipment. Automated viscosity sensors monitor dope consistency prior to filtration blocks to avoid unexpected pressure spikes.
Consistent acetyl distribution prevents structural micro-voids in extruded filaments, ensuring uniform dye penetration during downstream fabric finishing operations.
Material Specification
Purchase contracts establish tight tolerances for moisture levels and brightness indices across delivered flake batches. Quality control laboratories test incoming shipments to verify that viscosity indices fall within agreed commercial limits before unloading bulk container trucks.
Filament Yield
Final yarn properties depend on maintaining consistent esterification parameters across every polymer batch. Deviations in degree of substitution alter dye bath affinity and thermal heat-setting behavior in finished woven goods.
