Specimen Preparation
Precision cutting equipment extracts uniform circular specimens of a defined area from a fabric roll for accurate weight determination. Testing laboratories utilize a circular swatch cutter to prepare samples of exactly one hundred square centimetres. This device guarantees consistent specimen size, eliminating the human error associated with manual cutting.
It applies to woven, non-woven, and knitted fabrics, but is not suitable for loose yarns or raw fibres.
Cutter Action
The operator places the fabric on a specialized rubber cutting mat to protect the blades. Applying downward pressure, the operator rotates the top handle to drive the blades through the fabric. This movement produces a clean, unfrayed sample in seconds.
The round shape prevents edge loss during handling.
Weight Balance
Placing the cut specimen on a digital balance yields a direct measurement of fabric weight. Since the area is exactly one hundredth of a square metre, the weight in grams is multiplied by one hundred to obtain the fabric weight in grams per square metre. This rapid method is used on the production floor to check consistency.
Blade Maintenance
Dull blades can drag and distort elastic fabrics, leading to inaccurate specimen areas and incorrect weight results. Regularly rotating the four razor-sharp blades maintains clean cuts. This ensures that every sample has the exact required area.
