Value Reduction
Price adjustments applied to raw cotton transactions account for fibre characteristics that fall below the established base grade. These reductions, known as commercial cotton discounts, are calculated from instrument testing of fibre length, micronaire, and colour. The deductions penalize growers for batches that will increase waste or reduce yarn strength during spinning.
Quality Parameter
Micronaire readings that fall outside the premium range of three point seven to four point nine trigger significant price penalties. Low micronaire indicates immature fibres that form neps and dye unevenly, while high micronaire indicates coarse fibres that spin weak yarns. These parameters are measured by high volume instrument lines at the classing office to ensure unbiased assessment.
Trading Adjustments
Cotton merchants use these standardized discount tables to adjust the final payout against the New York futures benchmark price. A batch with high leaf content or spotted colour receives a specific discount per pound. This system ensures that mills do not pay premium prices for cotton that requires extensive cleaning and generates high blowroom waste, which would otherwise inflate yarn production costs.
Financial Settlement
Invoice calculations are finalized only after the official classing data are matched to the bale numbers. The pricing structure does not govern synthetic fibres or organic cotton specialty premiums. It regulates the standard commercial transactions of upland cotton in international trade.
