Laboratory Isolation
Hermetic storage vessels protect dried analytical specimens from absorbing atmospheric water vapour before their final weight is determined. Systematic desiccator handling is necessary when measuring the moisture regain of textile fibres after oven drying. This procedure ensures that the bone-dry state of the specimen is preserved during the transition from the heating chamber to the analytical balance.
Operational Procedure
Hot weighing bottles must be transferred quickly into the vessel using metal tongs, and the lid must be slid rather than lifted to maintain the seal. If the vessel is opened fully, ambient air enters and introduces moisture that alters the recorded dry weight of the textile. The lid must remain closed until the specimen has cooled completely to room temperature.
This cooling period usually lasts between twenty and thirty minutes to ensure thermal equilibrium before weighing.
Seal Integrity
Vacuum grease is applied to the ground-glass flange to form an airtight barrier against the outside environment. This grease must be applied in a thin, continuous film to prevent the lid from sticking or slipping during subsequent movements. If the grease layer is too thick, it can contaminate the edges of the sample container.
Safety Parameter
Cooling a warm container creates a partial vacuum inside the vessel, which can cause the lid to resist opening or to pop off violently if not slid sideways with steady pressure. This action must be done slowly to avoid sudden pressure changes that can disperse loose dry fibres from the weighing cup.
