Quality Discount
Financial adjustments applied to raw fibre transactions compensate the buyer for non-lint material present in the purchased bales. Implementing a foreign matter deduction reduces the final invoice price when the percentage of trash, leaf, and seed coat fragments exceeds the agreed standard limit. This practice protects spinning mills from paying for unusable material that will be discarded during yarn preparation.
Contaminant Assessment
Automated high-volume instruments scan sample specimens to determine the exact proportion of non-lint content. The foreign matter deduction is determined using these optical measurements, which measure the area and count of foreign particles on the sample surface. If these values are higher than the baseline grade, the buyer has the right to claim a financial adjustment.
Settlement Calculation
Commercial contracts specify the discount rate applied for each increment of non-lint material. The foreign matter deduction is calculated by multiplying the excess trash percentage by the total weight of the shipment and subtracting this from the invoice.
Processing Impairment
Excessive non-lint material in raw cotton bales damages carding and spinning machinery during industrial yarn manufacturing. In addition to triggering the contractually agreed foreign matter deduction, high trash levels cause frequent yarn breakages that lower spinning efficiency and degrade the quality of the finished yarn. Spinners maintain strict limits on acceptable trash levels to ensure the continuous operation of their open-end and ring-spinning machines, since clearing machinery stoppages increases labor costs.
