Molten Salt
Organic salts that remain in a liquid state at or near room temperature act as versatile solvents for textile processing. The unique properties of ionic liquids allow for the dissolution of natural polymers like cellulose and silk without the use of harsh traditional chemicals. These substances consist entirely of ions, which grants them low volatility and high thermal stability compared to conventional organic solvents.
Because they can be customized by changing the cation or anion, these liquids are tuned to specific processing needs in the mill.
Fibre Spinning
Regenerated fibres are produced by dissolving pulp in a solvent and extruding the solution through spinnerets. Using an ionic liquids system provides an alternative to the viscose process, potentially reducing the environmental impact of carbon disulfide emissions. The solvent is recovered after the fibre coagulates in a water bath, making the system highly efficient.
Finishing Application
Functional finishes can be applied more effectively when the fabric surface is slightly swollen by a solvent. Treating textiles with ionic liquids improves the penetration of flame retardants or antimicrobial agents into the core of the fibre.
Sustainable Processing
Industry interest in these solvents stems from their recyclability and low vapor pressure. Because ionic liquids do not evaporate easily, they do not contribute to air pollution in the mill environment. The ability to design specific salts for specific tasks makes them a precise tool for modern textile chemistry.
