Fault Metric
Entangled fiber clusters tightly rolled into minute, rounded specks across yarn or sliver structures represent a critical defect category in yarn spinning evaluations. Known universally as neps count, this laboratory test parameter quantifies the frequency of spherical fibre aggregations per thousand metres of yarn or per gram of raw card sliver. Capacitive sensors on high-speed yarn testers detect these imperfections as abrupt mass surges exceeding cross-sectional thresholds of positive two hundred percent over a one-millimetre test length.
Raw material ginning processes and high-speed carding flats influence this count directly. The measurement confirms whether mechanical opening removed or compounded entanglement faults.
Entanglement Origin
Formation mechanisms divide these knots into biological neps containing seed-coat fragments and mechanical neps composed of immature, collapsed fibres. Thin-walled, dead cotton fibres lack the bending rigidity necessary to resist rolling actions during opening, carding and drafting. Saw gins running at aggressive feed rates crush soft seed coats, dispersing fragments that gather loose lint into dense clusters.
Combing systems eliminate up to seventy percent of these entanglements through fine needle penetration and short fibre extraction into noil. Carding operations combat nep formation by maintaining sharp metallic wire clothing on cylinders and flats. Ineffective flat settings roll fibres rather than separating them, inflating the nep count delivered to drawing frames.
Finishing Impact
Fabric dyeing surfaces reveal the economic penalty imposed by high nep density in spun yarns. Compact mechanical neps lack sufficient dyestuff absorption capacity, emerging on piece-dyed single jersey or woven sateen as pale, uncoloured specks against dark backgrounds. Seed-coat neps show opposite behaviour by absorbing excess dyes, resulting in prominent dark flecks that mar fabric appearance.
Mercerisation swells immature fibres slightly to improve dye uptake, but mechanical knots remain visible under angled inspection lights. Fabric quality graders assess garments using illuminated grading booths, assigning demerit points for surface speckiness.
Contract Standard
Sales contracts for carded and combed yarns set nep count limits using international benchmark percentiles. High-grade combed compact yarns destined for fine shirting generally mandate neps count values aligned below the Uster Statistics five-percent level for the target linear density. Yarn packaging lots exceeding contracted nep thresholds incur direct price discounts or prompt container rejections at port warehouses.
Garment manufacturers impose strict defect ceilings on knitted greige lots, since high nep rates cannot be corrected by downstream chemical washing or enzymatic singeing. Quality audits verify nep frequencies before shipping containerized yarn pallets.
