Voluntary Standard
Verification of the presence and amount of organic material in a final product follows a strict chain of custody from the farm to the retail shelf. The ocs provides a professional framework for tracking non food products that contain between 5 and 100 percent organic fibres. Such a standard does not address the use of chemicals or social requirements, focusing solely on the integrity of the material origin.
Transaction Certification
Every movement of goods between certified entities requires a formal document to prove the organic status of the shipment. When a spinning mill buys cotton, the ocs requires a transaction certificate that matches the weight and lot number of the raw fibre. This ensures that the organic claim is supported by a continuous paper trail.
Labeling Grade
Products are categorized into two tiers based on the total organic percentage identified during the audit. The ocs 100 label identifies goods containing 95 percent or more organic material, while the ocs blended label covers anything below that threshold. These categories distinguish different levels of organic content in blended fabrics.
Scope Boundary
Certification is limited to the physical content of the fibre. Environmental impacts of the dyeing or finishing processes are excluded from the ocs, requiring different standards for a complete sustainability profile.
