Processed Fibre
Purified wool strand that has been washed, carded, and combed to align the fibres parallel is the primary intermediate product for worsted spinning. In textile purchasing, scoured wool top represents the material after the removal of grease, dirt, and short fibres. This material is sold based on its clean fibre weight and average diameter.
Spinning Assessment
Spinning mills purchase this combed material to produce high-grade worsted yarn for suiting and knitwear. Inspecting the scoured wool top before spinning ensures that the residual grease content is below contract limits. High residual grease leads to uneven dyeing and spinning breaks.
Cleaning Mechanism
Raw wool contains significant amounts of lanolin, sweat, and vegetable matter. The scoured wool top is produced by passing the raw fleece through a series of wash bowls containing hot water, soap, and soda ash. After drying, the clean fibres are combed to remove short fibres and form a continuous sliver.
This sliver is weighed under standard conditioning to determine its commercial weight. The residual grease is measured by solvent extraction to verify that it does not exceed zero point five percent of the mass.
Commercial Value
Transaction prices are calculated using these combed yields to ensure fair trade in the wool market. It prevents the transport of heavy waste materials across borders. This intermediate product is the standard traded form of worsted wool.
