Desiccant Material
Porous granular form of silicon dioxide adsorbs moisture from the surrounding air to prevent humidity-related damage. Placed inside packaging, silica gel protects textile and leather products from mold, mildew and color fading during maritime transit. The material is chemically inert and non-toxic.
Absorption Mechanism
The high surface area of the internal pores draws water molecules out of the air through physical adsorption. As humidity rises inside a shipping container, the pores fill with moisture, reducing the relative humidity to levels that inhibit fungal growth. Cobalt chloride or alternative color-changing compounds can be added to the gel to indicate when it has reached its moisture capacity.
Once saturated, the gel can be regenerated by heating it to drive off the adsorbed water. This reusable nature makes it highly efficient for ongoing storage needs.
Packing Application
Importers specify the quantity of desiccant sachets per carton based on the volume of the box and the duration of the voyage. Synthetic garments and leather shoes are vulnerable to moisture during long shipments through tropical regions.
Material Standard
Sachets must be tear-resistant to prevent the loose granules from spilling and damaging the finished garments. This packaging integrity is audited during pre-shipment quality checks.
