Protective Capability
Performance ratings quantify the resistance of a protective polymer layer to chemical or fluid penetration. In the context of coated synthetic fabrics, topcoat barrier efficiency measures how effectively a thin acrylic or polyurethane surface layer stops the migration of plasticizers. It also determines how well the coating protects the underlying fabric from stains and water.
Migration Resistance
Internal additives can migrate to the surface and cause sticky residue or discoloration. High topcoat barrier efficiency blocks these plasticizer molecules, keeping them inside the base polymer layer. This blocking function is evaluated by heating the fabric and measuring any weight loss or surface changes over several days.
A well-designed finish prevents the plasticizers from reaching the surface. This ensures the garment remains flexible and holds its shape over time.
Durability Testing
Repeated washing and abrasion can wear down the protective finish on the fabric. Measuring topcoat barrier efficiency after simulated wear cycles shows how long the coating will continue to protect the fabric.
Formulation Variable
Chemical composition and application thickness are the main factors that determine this protective performance. Cross-linked polymers have a denser molecular network, which helps improve topcoat barrier efficiency. However, if the finish is applied too thick, it can make the fabric stiff or brittle.
Achieving the right balance ensures the fabric stays flexible while providing good protection.
