Structural Coefficient
Mathematical yarn parameters establish the ratio between twist per inch and the square root of yarn count. Spinners use the alpha twist multiplier to maintain a constant twist angle across varying yarn counts. This calculation ensures that yarns of different thicknesses exhibit comparable levels of hardness.
Mechanical Behaviour
Spinning mills adjust twist to balance yarn strength against softness. A high alpha twist multiplier increases yarn tenacity until twist begins to shear the fibers. Conversely, lower twist levels yield soft yarns that are suitable for knitting.
Choosing the correct value prevents breaks during downstream processing.
Spin Limit
Short fibers require elevated twist multipliers to prevent fiber slippage. Spinning frames run faster when twist is optimal because yarn breakage decreases. This improves the overall yield of spinning mills.
Fabric Performance
Dye absorption and garment feel depend heavily on twist density. When a high alpha twist multiplier is selected, the resulting fabric exhibits a crisp hand and high abrasion resistance. This property is necessary for durable twills or denim fabrics, where the surface must withstand hard rubbing.
If the value is too low, the fabric will lose its shape. Soft knits instead require a low multiplier to avoid skewing and ensure comfort against the skin during wear.
