Control Dimension
Mechanical settings in the drafting zone of a spinning frame regulate the distance between the top and bottom aprons at the point of closest approach. The apron cradle spacing determines the intensity of the frictional field acting on floating fibers during the reduction of strand density. It defines the exit gap through which the fiber assembly passes before reaching the front rollers.
Drafting Stability
Fixed spacers or interchangeable plastic clips set this distance based on the count of the yarn being produced and the fiber length. If the apron cradle spacing remains too wide for the processed material, short fibers move erratically and create thick or thin places. Smaller gaps increase the pressure on the fiber strand to improve uniformity in fine yarn counts, which is helpful for the production of high quality fabrics used in luxury shirting.
Fiber Friction
The relationship between the thickness of the roving and the size of the opening dictates the friction. Tight settings prevent fiber slippage but may cause drafting force to exceed the strength of the strand. Excessive force leads to frequent ends down or mechanical wear on the apron surfaces.
Quality Consequence
Mill technicians verify the setting using precision feeler gauges or color coded spacers. Proper apron cradle spacing allows the mass variation of the yarn to stay within the limits specified for the delivery. Accurate adjustment minimizes the hairiness and increases the tensile strength of the finished product.
