Verification Procedure
Instrument adjustment using standard chemical solutions ensures the precision of electronic pH meters before testing textiles. Regular buffer calibration establishes a reliable baseline by aligning the voltage readings of the glass electrode with known pH values. Without this procedure, the readings of fabric extract acidity become highly inaccurate.
Accuracy Standard
Laboratory standards require the use of at least two distinct reference liquids to bracket the expected pH range of the test samples. For fabric extracts that typically sit between pH five and eight, the buffer calibration usually employs neutral and slightly acidic solutions. This multi-point adjustment corrects for both zero-point offset and electrode sensitivity, ensuring that the final measurements are legally and commercially defensible.
Laboratory Execution
Technicians perform this task daily or before each measurement series. The electrode is rinsed with deionised water, immersed in the standard fluid, and the meter is adjusted until the display matches the nominal value of the buffer.
Electrode Behaviour
Deviation in the electrode slope occurs over time as the glass aging process progresses or when contamination builds up. Frequent buffer calibration exposes these subtle shifts in performance, indicating when the sensor needs cleaning or replacement to prevent measurement drift during testing.
