Dimensional Compensation
Pattern adjustments compensate for the measurable recovery forces present in fabrics containing polyurethane filaments. An elastane allowance reduces the cut dimensions of a garment relative to the body measurements to ensure a firm fit and proper extension. Failure to calculate this correctly results in bagging at the joints or excessive compression that distorts the fabric structure.
Stretch Calculation
Testing the power of the fabric under specific loads determines the percentage of reduction needed in the marker. The elastane allowance varies according to the ratio of stretch yarn to the base fiber and the knit structure. High stretch denim requires different compensation than lightweight circular knits used for activewear.
Mechanical Tension
Tension settings on overlock and coverstitch machines must account for the way the fabric retracts after the needle passes. If the elastane allowance is ignored during assembly, the seams may pucker or the thread may snap when the user puts the garment on. Technicians perform wash tests to verify that the stretch properties remain stable after domestic laundering.
Production Verification
Production samples are measured against a relaxed template to confirm the accuracy of the pattern. The elastane allowance is the critical factor in achieving the desired silhouette for modern form fitting clothing.
