Moisture Balance Calculation
Natural and regenerated fibres absorb water vapor from ambient air until chemical equilibrium occurs. Laboratory technicians calculate hydroscopic regain to express absorbed moisture as a percentage of a sample’s bone-dry mass under standard testing conditions. The physical property applies to raw cotton, wool, silk and viscose rayon fibres but excludes non-absorbent synthetic filaments like polypropylene.
Environmental relative humidity directly dictates the final percentage.
Testing Environment
Standardized laboratory conditions require strict temperature and relative humidity control. Testing rooms maintain sixty-five percent relative humidity and twenty degrees Celsius during hydroscopic regain measurements to ensure reproducible data across testing laboratories. Conditioning takes up to twenty-four hours for dense woven fabrics.
Oven drying at one hundred and five degrees Celsius establishes the dry baseline.
Commercial Weight Adjustment
Raw fibre transactions rely on standard regain values to adjust commercial invoice weights. Buyers adjust invoice figures using hydroscopic regain percentages to avoid paying for excess water. Unadjusted wet weight leads to substantial commercial losses.
Processing Impact
Fibre moisture levels alter static generation, fiber flexibility, yarn evenness and spinning performance. Spinning mills monitor hydroscopic regain to adjust drafting roller pressure and ambient humidification in the carding room. Inadequate moisture causes high yarn breakage rates during high-speed spinning.
