Standard Specification
An internationally recognized testing procedure defines the digital measurement of animal fibre diameter and distribution using the optical fibre diameter analyser. This method, known as iwto-68, is optimized for measuring single wool fibres using automated image processing to ensure high speed and reliability. By using this standard, commercial labs can process thousands of fibres within a few minutes.
The output includes both the mean value and the complete distribution of the lot.
Laboratory Execution
Technicians place washed, carded fibres on a glass slide and insert them into the testing unit for laser-based analysis. Under the iwto-68 protocol, the machine registers each fibre and calculates its width along the longitudinal axis. This approach minimizes human error by removing the need for manual focus and measurement.
Production Utility
Weaving mills use the diameter distribution data to select raw materials that will spin into yarn with the required strength and handle. When the diameter distribution is too wide, the wool is redirected to less demanding fabrics.
Quality Check
Wool brokers use the test certificates issued under this standard to guarantee the uniform quality of their shipments. This eliminates the risk of receiving wool that is too coarse for fine knitwear.
