Fiber Analysis
Analytical instruments designed for the rapid measurement of fiber diameter and distribution provide essential data for the classification of animal fibers. The ofda100 system utilizes image analysis to scan thousands of individual wool or cashmere fibers in a matter of minutes. It replaces slower methods such as the projection microscope while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Data generated includes mean diameter and the standard deviation of that diameter.
Measurement Technique
Magnified images of fibers placed on a glass slide are captured by a digital camera and processed by specialized software. The ofda100 identifies the edges of each fiber to calculate its width at multiple points. This process accounts for the non circular cross sections often found in natural materials.
Operators use the resulting histogram to identify the presence of coarse hairs that might cause prickle in the final garment.
Commercial Grading
Buyers of raw wool rely on these reports to set the price of a lot. The ofda100 provides the micron profile which is the primary indicator of wool quality.
Lab Calibration
Regular calibration using standard grease wool samples ensures the consistency of the optical sensors. The ofda100 requires a controlled environment to prevent thermal expansion from affecting the focus of the lens.
