Whitening Agents
Chemical compounds that absorb invisible ultraviolet light and re-emit it as visible blue light increase the perceived whiteness of textile fibers. Textile mills apply optical brighteners to cotton, polyester, and nylon to mask the natural yellowish tint of raw fibers. This chemical treatment is essential for achieving the clean, bright white shades required by modern fashion brands.
Chemical Action
Fluorescent chemical action compensates for the deficiency of blue light reflected by untreated textiles. When ultraviolet radiation strikes the treated fabric, the molecules of the brightener absorb energy and transition to an excited state. As they return to their ground state, they release that energy in the blue spectrum.
This extra blue light combines with the yellow light reflected by the fiber, producing a neutral white that appears brighter to the human eye.
Industrial Application
Textile technicians add whitening chemistry directly to the scouring or bleaching bath during pre-processing. They must be selected based on the fiber type, as polyester requires disperse-type brighteners while cotton utilizes direct or acid-type brighteners.
Treatment Boundaries
Over-application of these compounds can cause the fabric to take on a grey or greenish hue. Once the fibers are saturated, further additions will decrease the whiteness rather than increase it.
