Whiteness Measurement
Quantitative comparison between the light reflected by a sample and the light reflected by a standard white reference. A reflectance ratio determines the brightness and whiteness of bleached fabrics before they enter the dyeing phase. This metric is expressed as a decimal or a percentage.
Calculation Basis
Colour measurement relies on this value to calculate the K over S values in the Kubelka-Munk theory. The reflectance ratio at specific wavelengths allows the lab to predict how a dye will appear on a given substrate. Low reflectance in the blue spectrum often indicates a yellowish tint that may require optical brighteners.
Quality Standard
Quality control teams use the measurement to ensure consistency across different production lots. If the reflectance ratio of a new batch of grey goods is lower than the standard, the dyer must adjust the recipe to reach the target shade. This adjustment prevents the production of off-shade garments.
Instrumental Assessment
Instrumental assessment provides a more objective result than visual inspection under a light box. Because the reflectance ratio is a mathematical value, it can be shared digitally between a mill in one country and a buyer in another. This digital communication speeds up the approval process for lab dips.
