Daylight Simulation
A standardized light source specification enables consistent color evaluation by replicating the spectral distribution of average outdoor light. This standard illuminant d65 represents average daylight including the ultraviolet region, with a correlated color temperature of approximately sixty-five hundred kelvins. It is the primary reference illuminant used in the textile and apparel industry.
Spectral Distribution
The wavelength distribution of the light source covers the range from three hundred to eight hundred nanometers. Because standard illuminant d65 includes ultraviolet light, it activates optical brightening agents in white fabrics, showing their true brightness. This makes it superior to traditional incandescent light sources for evaluating bleached cottons and synthetics.
Textile Metamerism
Two fabric samples may match under one light source but appear completely different under another. Using standard illuminant d65 alongside a secondary source like tungsten or fluorescent light allows colorists to detect this metamerism. If the color match fails under either source, the dye recipe must be adjusted.
Quality Control
Visual color matching requires a light booth that complies with international standards for illuminant simulation. Industrial colorists place the dyed fabric beside the master standard inside the booth to inspect the color match under standard illuminant d65 before shipment. If the shade is accepted, the production batch can proceed to the garment cutting room.
This reduces the risk of finished garments being rejected by the retail buyer due to color mismatch.
