Inline Analysis
The color analysis of fabric performed immediately after the drying and curing phase provides the first real-time assessment of dye fixation. Conducting a stenter exit measurement allows mill engineers to detect shade deviation and widthwise color variation during continuous processing. This immediate check prevents the production of hundreds of meters of off-shade fabric before corrections are made.
Process Control
An automated spectrophotometer is mounted on a traverse bar across the width of the fabric as it emerges from the drying oven. The instrument continuously scans the moving web from edge to edge, measuring the reflectance at high speed. This system instantly transmits the color data to the control room, allowing operators to adjust the oven temperature or dye feed rate.
For example, if the exit reading indicates that the fabric is becoming lighter, the dyer can increase the concentration of the dye bath feeding the padding rollers. This closed-loop system reduces the dependency on manual sampling and speeds up batch approvals.
Garment Quality
By maintaining a continuous record of the fabric’s color profile, the mill can guarantee that all rolls delivered to the factory are within the allowed shade tolerance. This data minimizes the need for manual shade sorting before fabric cutting.
System Limits
Thermal metamerism reduces the effectiveness of immediate scan readings on fabrics where the color shifts temporarily while hot. For these materials, the fabric must be allowed to cool and condition before a final decision is made.
