Spectral Analysis
Optical measurement techniques operating in the ultraviolet wavelength spectrum quantify light absorption and transmission through liquid chemical solutions or solid fabric substrates. Utilizing monochromatic ultraviolet radiation across two hundred to four hundred nanometers, UV spectrophotometry measures dye concentration in exhaustion baths, ultraviolet absorber content on finished fabrics, fabric yellowness index values and ultraviolet protection factor ratings of sun-protective garments. This analytical method evaluates light interaction across ultraviolet bands, but excludes infrared thermal absorption and visible color matching evaluations.
Optical Principle
Transmitted or reflected light intensity is measured across ultraviolet wavelengths relative to a reference beam or calibration standard. Liquid dye solutions follow the Beer-Lambert law, where absorbance correlates linearly with solute concentration for precise dye bath exhaustion monitoring. For solid textiles, integrated sphere attachments collect diffuse light transmitted through the fabric structure to calculate exact spectral transmittance values across UVA and UVB radiation bands.
Protective Rating
Calculated transmittance values determine the ultraviolet protection factor rating assigned to sun-protective apparel fabrics. Lower transmittance yields higher protective clothing ratings.
Analytical Control
Spectrophotometer calibration requires certified baseline reference standards prior to sample testing. Dyestuff quality laboratories document absorption peak wavelengths to verify chemical purity and lot-to-lot dye strength consistency.
