Yield Calculation
Efficiency ratio compares the weight of finished yarn produced to the total weight of raw fibre consumed by a spinning mill. A high yarn realization indicates that the processing machinery is effectively removing trash without losing too much usable lint. This figure is expressed as a percentage and is a primary indicator of the operational health of a spinning facility.
It accounts for all losses, including moisture evaporation, invisible waste, and the physical removal of seeds or husks.
Material Loss
Factors that lower yarn realization include the extraction of short fibres during combing. Combed yarns show a lower percentage than carded ones. This trade off between yield and strength is a central decision.
Profitability Driver
Small improvements in yarn realization have a large impact on the bottom line because raw fibre represents the majority of the cost in yarn production. A one percent increase in this ratio can save a large mill thousands of kilograms of raw material over a year. Procurement teams use historical data to set targets for their suppliers and to evaluate the quality of different cotton growths.
High realization is often a sign of both superior raw material and well maintained equipment.
Weight Boundary
Accuracy in calculating yarn realization depends on careful monitoring of moisture levels in both the incoming bales and the outgoing yarn. Cotton is highly hygroscopic and its weight changes significantly based on the relative humidity of the plant. If the mill adds too much moisture during the conditioning phase, the realization figure might appear artificially high.
Standardizing the weights to a specific moisture regain ensures that the efficiency measurement remains valid across different seasons and climates.
