Efficiency Ratio
Material efficiency coefficients calculate the ratio of high-quality finished product obtained from a given quantity of raw material feedstock. Within textile recycling plants, the yield conversion factor determines the mass of recycled polyester yarn produced from a specific input of shredded PET bottles. This ratio accounts for the loss of material during washing and shredding.
It represents the core metric for assessing the industrial viability of chemical recycling processes.
Process Tracking
Continuous monitoring of material losses helps mills optimize their recycling machinery. The yield conversion factor is measured by weighing the incoming textile waste and comparing it to the weight of the drawn filament yarns. If the factor falls below the standard baseline, it indicates that too much polymer is being lost as waste during yarn spinning.
This signal prompts the engineering team to inspect the filters and adjust the extruder temperature to reduce waste.
Production Costs
Financial projections and raw material procurement rely on these conversion ratios to set fabric prices. A high yield conversion factor means that less textile waste is needed to produce a tonne of recycled fabric, which reduces the raw material cost per garment. Conversely, processing heavily blended garment scrap, such as polyester-cotton mixes, yields a low conversion factor because the cotton must be separated and discarded.
This low yield increases the cost of the recycled polyester yarn, which is then passed to apparel brands. Understanding these ratios allows brands to select fabrics that offer the best balance of price and recycled content.
Quality Boundary
Impurity levels in raw materials dictate the maximum efficiency a mill can achieve. Contaminants such as sewing thread and elastane lower the yield conversion factor by requiring intensive sorting and filtration. This limitation means that post-industrial cutting scrap yields a much higher conversion factor than post-consumer garments.
For this reason, mills pay a premium for clean, sorted textile waste.
