Process Definition
Automated separation of foreign matter from raw cotton fibres during the initial opening and cleaning stages. Continuous blowroom sorting identifies and removes contaminants like plastic and jute while the material moves in a high-velocity air stream. The process stops at the point where the lint is delivered to the carding machine for further alignment.
Detection Mechanism
Optical sensors and high-speed cameras monitor the tuft flow to detect colour differences and material density variations. A continuous blowroom sorting system operates in milliseconds to trigger air nozzles that blast identified trash into a waste chamber. This rapid response ensures that the main fibre flow remains uninterrupted during the extraction.
Quality Benefit
Contamination removal at this early stage prevents the fragmentation of foreign matter into smaller particles that would otherwise be harder to extract during spinning. Successful continuous blowroom sorting reduces the presence of polypropylene in the finished yarn, which prevents white spots from appearing during the dyeing of the fabric. The efficiency of the sorting directly influences the commercial value of the yarn lot by lowering the second-grade percentage.
Operational Limit
Detection thresholds must be calibrated to avoid excessive lint loss along with the trash. While continuous blowroom sorting effectively captures surface contaminants, it cannot remove seed coat fragments that are deeply embedded within the fibre tufts.
