Solids Retention
Mass of solids retained on a textile substrate after the application of a finish and subsequent evaporation of the solvent or water. Calculated as a percentage of the original dry fabric weight, dry pick-up determines the concentration of active chemical agents remaining in the goods. Accurate measurement prevents the over-application of expensive resins or softeners.
It is a fundamental calculation in the padding and drying stages of wet processing.
Calculation Method
Determination involves comparing the weight of the oven-dry fabric before treatment with the weight after the finishing agent is applied and dried. This dry pick-up value relates directly to the wet pick-up and the concentration of the bath. If the wet pick-up is sixty percent and the bath concentration is five percent, the resulting value is three percent.
Process Influence
Variations in dryer temperature or line speed do not alter this value provided the moisture is fully removed. However, excessive dry pick-up leads to stiff hand-feel or reduced tear strength in cotton fabrics. Controlled application ensures that the fabric meets performance standards without wasting chemical resources.
Laboratory Verification
Technicians use gravimetric analysis to confirm that the mill output matches the specifications defined in the trial phase. Consistent results indicate stable padding pressure and liquor concentration.
