Quantitative Measurement
Fibre composition analysis in textile laboratories relies on precise mass measurements to determine the relative proportions of different materials in a yarn or fabric. Establishing the gravimetric blend ratio requires removing any moisture or non-fibrous finishes from the sample through pre-conditioning. This process is standardized under ISO or ASTM methods to guarantee reproducibility across different testing facilities.
Accuracy depends on using an analytical balance with a sensitivity of at least one-tenth of a milligram. The starting dry mass provides the baseline for all subsequent calculations.
Solvent Dissolution
Selective extraction uses chemical reagents that dissolve only one targeted fibre type while leaving the other intact. For cotton and polyester mixtures, concentrated sulfuric acid degrades the cotton fraction without affecting the polyester. The insoluble residue is collected, washed, dried, and weighed to find the mass of the remaining component.
Proper filtration prevents the loss of fine fiber particles.
Moisture Recovery
Applying standard allowance values corrects the raw dry weight to reflect commercial transaction standards. Fiber types retain varying amounts of moisture under normal atmospheric conditions. Adding these moisture regain percentages to the dry weights yields the official commercial blend composition.
Calculation Precision
Calculations must account for any minor loss of the insoluble component during chemical exposure. Corrective factors are applied to the final masses to compensate for this effect. This ensures the output represents the true blend ratio.
